The First
Pride Parade
The first gay pride parade, otherwise known as the
March on Stonewall in 1969, began as a protest against
discrimination and violence against gays in New York
City. Today, pride events have become an annual ritual
and have grown to include thousands of gay people, as
well as hundreds of spectators, to celebrate our diversity.
Many GLBT people dress in bright colors (including
the rainbow), head-to-toe leather or sometimes next
to nothing, all to celebrate our lifestyle and remind
the rest of the world that we deserve the same rights
and freedoms granted to others. Pride is also a symbol
of solidarity and an opportunity to express the vivid
personalities which reflect the many GLBT communities
throughout the world. What a sight to see the skies
covered with rainbow pride flags and banners, our symbol
of solidarity and freedom.
The
Rainbow
Flag
The gay pride flag was designed by Gilbert Baker in
1978 and showed at the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian
Freedom Day Parade. Each color on the gay pride flag
has a different meaning. Check out the t-shirt
